We’re back with another episode. This time, we’re talking to Kirt, an awesome California-based photographer who has found amazing success in just 2 years. His website and Instagram really speak for themselves, with every image having its own story to tell and a real sense of tenderness between each of the couples. In our chat, we cover how he started, his secret to engaging with a couple and how to create special moments on shoot.

Say hello to Kirt

Kirt has had a meteoric rise in the world of photography - starting his business in 2019 and now a super-successful wedding and couples photographer. After dabbling in photography throughout high school, college and in culinary photography post-graduation Kirt already had a good amount of base knowledge. It was in 2018 when he was asked by a fellow novice to be the second shooter at a wedding. Despite being brought along to assist, he took charge directing the bride, groom and their whole family to create some magical shots. Since then, he’s gone on to run his own highly successful photography business, initially photographing families before moving on to solely couples and wedding shoots.

What we cover

  • An intro to Kirt and his life as a photographer in Sacramento, California.

  • How he entered the photography industry.

  • Faking it until you make it.

  • How to get traction as a wedding and couples photographer.

  • The importance of connecting with your client and incorporating their story into the shoot.

  • Being the ‘right person in the room’ and feeling comfortable with clients.

  • Using a session guide to cover ground pre-session.

  • Kirt’s major influences in finance, lifestyle, business and growth.

  • His one thing that has accelerated his business.

Kirt’s 3 implementable things to level up your business or pockets:

  1. Being part of a community that helps you thrive.

  2. Take it slow dude. In your business and on shoot.

  3. If you can, give generously. Your time, wisdom, skill or money.

My biggest takeaway

Kirt is the king of connection. For me, his tips on how to engage with clients and prepare them for their shoots are priceless. The pre-shoot Zoom call and session guide are both great tools to make sure everyone is on the same page and feeling relaxed. It’s when both photographer and client are comfortable that it’s easy to take beautiful, natural looking photos.
